Everything on this planet has misconceptions because human beings often create untrue stories about things they do not believe in. Not surprising, yeah?
It’s also not shocking that gift cards have myths surrounding them?
Gift cards are a great gift to give and have come in handy for several people at different times.
What’s not to love about something that saves you the headache of picking out a gift for your colleague that they may not end up liking?
In this article, we will share some common myths about gift cards and debunk them, to enable you to make an informed decision.
1. A Gift Card Is Not Personal
This is absolutely untrue. On the contrary, one could argue that gift cards are, in fact, personal. ‘How’ you may ask? When people give gift cards, they are often cards that belong to your favorite store.
It means they cared enough about you to remember where you like to shop, and offered you an opportunity to buy something from the said shop without spending their own money.
If that is not love, tell me what is? No one wants a drawer full of things they do not like when they can receive gift cards and buy what they will actually use.
2. Gift Cards Are Stressful To Redeem
Some people hate gift cards just because of this reason. However, the truth could not be more far-fetched. Redeeming your gift card does not have to be a stressful ordeal.
The advent of the digital age has made it possible for both physical gift cards and online gift cards to be redeemed online via the company’s website.
It is as easy as using your debit card. Fill out the required information and shop to your heart’s content wherever you are.
3. Gift Cards Must Be Redeemed Quickly
This is another myth that I will gladly debunk. Yes, it is encouraged to use your gift card as soon as possible, but not because it will expire in days. Gift cards on average have a lifespan of five years.
The only reason why it is encouraged is because there is a high tendency for one to forget about them.
However, if you have plans to redeem it at a much later date for something special, go ahead and keep them.
4. You Must Spend Your Gift Card At Once
With gift cards, you are under no obligation to spend all your money at once.
This myth only encourages impulse spending. Yes, you can be prudent with your gift cards too. If you receive a Nordstrom gift card, and you want to buy three clothes you’ve been wanting, but only two are currently available, you could buy them and come back for the third.
Your unspent money will be there when you need it. You do not have to feel any pressure to buy what you do not need because you want to spend all your money at once.
5. If You Sell Gift Cards, You Do Not Appreciate the Giver
Okay, I understand how people may think this way, but trust me. It’s a myth too. Let’s imagine your grandmother came visiting, and the last time she came, you were crazy about games, so she got you a steam gift card.
Unbeknownst to her, you aren’t much of a gaming fan anymore because school has taken so much of your time. So, you have two options- never use the gift card or sell the gift card to buy new clothes for school. Which option do you think your grandmother will be happy about? Buying things you truly need, I’m sure.
Regardless of how it looks, she has played a part in getting you what you like. For the best rates, check out Cardtonic, you’ll be sure to get your money’s worth.
In conclusion, gift cards are an excellent alternative to physical gifts or cash, and should not be ignored without due consideration.
