Elmhurst Blotter: Unknown person used email ruse of teacher appreciation week to convince resident to buy gift cards – Chicago Tribune

The following items were taken from area police department reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Alcohol

Jacob Truett, 20, of the 9100 block of East 430 South, Wolcottville, Ind., and Kyle Schacht, 20, of the 200 block of South Grace Avenue, Elmhurst, were charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor at 12:53 a.m. May 21.

Wilson Lopez Cruz, 20, of the 1000 block of West Irving Park Road, Bensenville, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor at 8:09 p.m. May 21.

In the same incident, Oscar Lopez Carrillo, 25, of the same Bensenville address, was cited for possession of open alcohol in a public place.

Battery

Nathan Smahon, 40 of the 300 block of North Shady Lane, Elmhurst, was charged with domestic battery at 10:13 p.m. May 19.

Burglary

Corre Plater, 32, of the 8900 block of Chatwood, Houston, Texas, was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and possession of burglary tools at 10:40 a.m. May 19 following police investigation of a burglary of a motor vehicle in the 100 block of North York Street.

In the same incident, Charley Curry, 29, of the 300 block of DeHaven, Houston, was charged as a fugitive from justice.

Business violation

Aiming Zhu, 47, of the 1000 block of Radclyffe Court, Elgin, was charged May 25 with failing to post a massage permit in the work area, unlawful massage and two counts of massage establishment violations in YS Massage, 195 N. York St.

Criminal damage to property

A fire extinguisher box was damaged and a fire extinguisher taken from the seventh floor of the Addison parking deck, 135 N. Addison Ave., reported at 7:20 p.m. May 20.

An officer responding to the Addison deck for a report of a fire alarm at 8:57 p.m. May 24 found a fire extinguisher discharged on the seventh floor of the structure.

Later the same evening, an officer found a fire extinguisher box damaged and a fire extinguisher discharged on the sixth floor of the building.

Drugs

Jerry Huffman, 48, of 6600 block of Kansas Avenue, Hammond, Ind., was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver’s license and improper lighting at 1:36 a.m. May 20.

Yefri Tomas, 18, of the 1000 block of Argyle Street, Bensenville, was cited for possession of cannabis at 7:44 p.m. May 24.

Bonnie Shafer, 35, of the 100 block of East Myrtle Street, Elizabeth, Illinois, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with suspended registration at 9:26 p.m. May 25.

DUI

Carlos Garcia, 18, of the 600 block of South York Road, Bensenville, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance, unlawful possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle, driving without a valid driver’s license, speeding, transport of open alcohol in a motor vehicle and consumption of alcohol by a minor at 1:17 a.m. May 19.

Darius Mucha, 41, of the 4N600 block of Country Club Drive, West Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance and failing to report an accident at 11:37 p.m. May 21.

Sandra Vital, 38, of the 600 block of Anderson Drive, Lake in the Hills, was charged with driving under the influence, endangering the life of a child, transport of open alcohol and parking in the roadway at 2:42 a.m. May 22.

Lluvia Acosta-Martinez, 18, of the 900 block of Dolores Drive, Bensenville, was charged with driving under the influence, failing to give information to owner after striking an unattended vehicle, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and improper lane use at 5:40 p.m. May 22.

Jose Velazquez, 42, of the 200 block of East North Avenue, Elmhurst, was charged with driving under the influence at 9:16 p.m. May 22.

Fraud

An unknown person posing as the principal of Edison Elementary School emailed a parent asking her to buy gift cards for teacher appreciation week. The victim complied and forwarded gift card information to the offender on May 24.

Identity theft

A resident reported an unknown suspect used her information to file for unemployment benefits between May 1 and May 14.

A resident reported on May 16 that an unknown person attempted to open accounts with Chase and Bank of America and tried to change the resident’s address on bank records.

Property damage

A motorist who knocked over a mail box in the 500 block of West Crockett Avenue at 6:10 p.m. May 23 went home to get pen and paper to leave a note and returned to the scene to apologize in person.

Theft

A resident reported a handgun and jewelry were missing from a safe in his bedroom, reportedly taken between Dec. 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2021.

A trailer belonging to Dumpster Daddies of Bartlett was reported taken from a storage location in the 600 block of West Grand Avenue on May 19.

Allergy medications were reported taken from Jewel Osco, 944 S. York St., by a tall, thin Black male about 35 years old who left the store with the items at 9:45 p.m. May 19.

A catalytic converter was reported taken from a rental vehicle parked in the lot of SpringHill Suites, 410 W. Lake St., between 9 p.m. May 22 and 6:30 a.m. May 23.

Another catalytic converter was reported taken from the SpringHill lot overnight between May 23 and May 24.

A catalytic converter was reported taken from a work van in a parking lot in the 900 block of Oaklawn Avenue between midnight May 22 and 6:45 a.m. May 23.

A catalytic converter was reported taken from a white work van parked on the west side of Integra Health Equipment, 321 W. Lake St., at 2:13 a.m. May 23.

A skateboard was reported taken from outside Jewel Osco, 944 S. York St., at 6:45 p.m. May 23.

A Ring camera was reported taken from the front door of a home in the 100 block of East First Street early on the morning of May 25.

A light blue bicycle was reported taken from in front of Top Driver, 494 S. Spring Rd., at 8:37 p.m. May 25.

Theft by deception

A victim reported on May 22 that an unknown caller claiming to be an Amazon employee convinced him to transfer money by Zelle and buy three gift cards. The victim later was able to stop the Zelle transfer, but the gift cards had already been used.

Traffic violations

Jennilee Velez, 20, of the 2100 block of North Mobile Avenue, Chicago, was charged with driving without a valid driver’s license and driving with illegally tinted windows at 8:35 p.m. May 19.

Adam Carter, 45, of the 200 block of East Fremont Avenue, Elmhurst, was cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license and driving without insurance at 5:50 p.m. May 22.

Yasmine Horton, 33, of the 1300 block of Wing Street, Elgin, was charged with driving without a valid driver’s license, driving with suspended registration, failing to have a rear license plate light and driving without insurance at 12:32 a.m. May 24.
