A year 7 student at Epping Boys High brought tens of thousands of dollars in cash to school and bought lavish gifts for his friends, sending them on shopping sprees and buying gaming vouchers and computers.
The school’s principal, Jessica Schadel, wrote to parents on Tuesday to warn them of an issue in the year 7 cohort that might have filtered out to other year groups.

“Today we had occasion to talk to year 7 about amounts of cash that has been circulating around in the form of ‘gifts’, gaming vouchers, funded shopping trips and computer equipment,” she wrote.
“The Youth Officer from Ryde Police also spoke to the year group regarding this matter.
“We have asked the boys to spend some time reflecting on what they may know about this issue and to see a member of the year 7 wellbeing team should they have any information.”
One parent, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the student had $27,000 in cash and was sprinkling it around “like confetti”.
NSW Police would not confirm the amount to the Herald but a police source, who was not permitted to speak publicly, said the figure was in the “tens of thousands”.
“About 1pm on Tuesday, police received information that a student attended his school in Epping with a large sum of cash which he distributed to other students,” a police statement said.
“Officers attached to the Ryde Police Area Command responded and made inquiries with the school administration. No further police action is anticipated.”
