Panaji: With a rise in cyber crime cases in the state, Goa police on Sunday urged people not to respond to any unidentified messages on WhatsApp without confirming the genuineness of such accounts. They have also urged people to promptly inform the police on receipt of any such message.
Referring to numerous cases across the country that have been reported of miscreants impersonating esteemed political representatives and senior government officials by putting photos downloaded from the internet as the their profile photos on fake WhatsApp accounts, cyber crime SP Nidhin Valsan said, “Citing emergency and other such reasons, these miscreants attempt to lure people into transferring money by several means including gift cards.”
Suspected persons located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra and Darjeeling and West Bengal have been identified and are being interrogated in cases of impersonation of WhatsApp accounts of public representatives and senior government officials as reported in the cyber police station, Ribandar.
“The public is advised to remain vigilant when they receive messages asking for money or gift cards from ‘accounts’ of respected public representatives and government officials. As a matter of precaution, Goa police urges everyone to not to respond to such messages without confirming the genuineness of such accounts. On receipt of any such message, please inform the Police at the earliest,” Valsan said.
